- Retirements to the Costa Blanca, the Costa del Sol and inland Andalucía — usually a full household and frequently a downsize as well.
- Work relocations to Madrid and Barcelona, smaller loads with a start date set by an employer.
- Second-property owners in Valencia and Murcia shipping part-loads out and sometimes back.
The road out
Converging on the M20 and the Eurotunnel shuttle at Folkestone. For Spain the shuttle is almost always right — the vehicle has the whole of France ahead of it and the driver needs the hours intact rather than spent on a deck.
From Calais the A26 and A10 run south past Paris and Tours to Bordeaux, then the A63 to the border at Irún. Past Irún the country forks: the AP-1 and AP-68 inland for Madrid, or the AP-7 staying with the coast through Catalonia and working down the Mediterranean side to Valencia, Alicante and Murcia. Andalucía is reached by carrying on south of Madrid on the A-4.

Customs, and the order to do it in
Spain applies the same principle as France with considerably more documentation attached. Household goods enter free of duty under transfer of residence relief, but Spanish customs is particular about the inventory and the applicant's registration status, and the order of events matters before loading.

Two decisions, not one
A great many Spanish moves are also downsizes, and treating them as a single exercise is how people become overwhelmed. Shipping a full British household across a continent in order to sell half of it at the other end is the expensive version of the same outcome.
The better order is to take what you are certain about, hold the rest here, and decide once you are there and can see the rooms. It is the same advice we give on a domestic downsize and it applies with more force when a continent is involved.
Climate is the other editing argument. Waxed and oiled furniture, glued veneers and upholstery chosen for a British winter all behave differently in an Andalucian summer. We will say so at survey rather than invoice you for the freight and let you find out.

01 How long does a UK to Spain move take?
It depends on the origin in Britain, the destination, whether the load has a dedicated vehicle or shares one, and how the border and clearance are running. Your written quote carries an estimated window for your actual route.
02 Is a shared load worth it?
For anything short of a full house, usually. It costs less and departs when the vehicle fills. Where the dates cannot move, pay for a dedicated vehicle.
03 We are downsizing as well as moving. How should we handle it?
As two stages. Ship what you are sure about, hold the rest here, and decide once you can see the Spanish rooms. Cheaper than shipping everything and selling half of it there.
04 Do I need an NIE first?
You need it for the relief, so effectively yes. Goods can be collected and held while the application runs — that is how most of these are sequenced.
05 Can you collect from the north of England or Scotland?
Yes, with the domestic leg built into the schedule rather than bolted on. From a long way north, joining a vehicle already routed south is frequently the better value.
06 Will you take garden things?
If you want them, but soil, plant material and some garden chemicals are restricted and an unwashed pot can delay a whole load. We flag anything doubtful at survey.
